2017: The Year in Preview

The new year has made its much anticipated appearance and most of us are safely off on the new journey that it entails.  Each of us survived in some form the year that just ended, and most are curious as to what the new will hold.

I for one have been giving a lot of thought to the now new year, desiring to not just let it happen, but to take charge and make it conform to my aspirations.  Legendary UCLA men's basketball coach John Wooden would not tell his players to "have a good day."  He said, "to have a good day is too passive," and that for the most part we make our days by what we put into them.  I have grown over the last several years to agree with him, and who can argue with the success he had in his career?

So where are you going Combs?  That is a great question.  Here is what I am thinking for 2017.

Personal
Mission Statement
2017

My personal mission for 2017 is to be more of what GOD wants me to be.  I will seek to live with Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 in mind, fearing GOD and keeping His commandments, knowing that He will judge all.

Personal
Vision Statement
2017

My vision for 2017 is a life rich in GOD with a growing love and honor for Him.  A year of growth as a husband, father, and friend.  A year filled with memorable events shared with others.  2017 will be a year where I will be a better me, in GOD's will.

I am looking to build my 2017 around these two statements and am still working on clarifying some specific goals.  I hope that you will consider putting in writing for yourself some sort of similar statement that gives you a clear direction.  In my case I actually saved these two statements in the memo function on my smartphone and then pasted them to my home screen so that I can review them every day as a reminder of how I intend to live.

On Friday Angie, Olivia and I spent the afternoon out and took a drive, during which we had a great family talk about goals for the coming year.  One of the goals we set as a family goal is working together toward having a week long family vacation (something we have not done in several years), and discussed several possible destinations.  This discussion led us to talk about changes that we could make in some of our spending and saving habits that would be necessary to achieve this goal, and was very positive.  We also talked about taking care of the "little things".  All of us have a list of the undone little things that never seem to get taken care of, and remain on the the list far too long.  We are going to make a concerted effort to track, tackle, and knockout the little things in 2017.

I am sharing these with you to promote some thought in your life, and to ask for your help. Will you serve as an accountability partner in the coming year?  If you know me please keep me on track, and maybe share some of your thoughts for your own life as well.  As my specific goals become more clearly defined I will share some of them with you in the coming weeks.

Lets be the best we can be in 2017.  It all starts when we Make today GREAT!
